PAINT A DARTMOOR PONYCOMPETITION 2026

From rugged tors and ancient stone circles to wild ponies, rushing streams and Dartmoor folklore, everyone has their own picture of what makes Dartmoor special.

This summer, you are invited to capture that spirit by creating your own unique piece of artwork on a Dartmoor pony cut-out.

The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust has teamed up with Hatherleigh Festival and Salar Gallery to launch a creative community project celebrating one of Dartmoor’s best-loved symbols.

Purchase an MDF Dartmoor pony cut-out from Salar Gallery during July or at the Hatherleigh Festival Street Market on 11 July for £25. If you order your pony from Salar Gallery during June and purchase it before the end of the Festival, you’ll pay the reduced price of £20.

Then let your imagination run free.

Paint it, collage it or appliqué it with your own interpretation of Dartmoor. Your design might be inspired by tors, rivers, wildlife, archaeology, folklore, farming, wildflowers or anything else that captures the spirit of the moor.

Return your finished pony to Salar Gallery by 1 September, with judging taking place later that month.

There are prizes of £100, £50 and £25, along with a special prize for the best entry by someone aged under 16.

Following the judging, the finished pony artworks will be auctioned in the autumn, with proceeds shared between Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust and Hatherleigh Festival.
