Moorland Newtake Scheme

The following information is published with the permission of the Dartmoor Pony Society

The Newtake Scheme is sponsored by the Duchy of Cornwall and the Dartmoor Pony Society. The purpose is to preserve the pedigree pony on the Moor, and to help the Moorland farmers improve their stock. Mares and stallions enter the Newtake from end of May until the end of September. It is only open to mares born on Dartmoor and owned by a current member of the Dartmoor Pony Society, with a holding number within the National Park.

  • An unregistered mare is inspected and if approved as a potential SRD will become eligible for an SRD passport once she has entered the Newtakeand run with a DPS fully registered stallion.
  • The progeny of SRD mares are potential SRD1 ponies and may be graded SRD1 as foals following a successful inspection and approval. SRD1 mares/fillies can then entere a Newtake to run with a different fully registered DPS stallion.
  • The progeny of SRD1 mares are potential SRD2 ponies and may be graded SRD2 as foals following a successful inspection and approval. SRD2 fillies/mares can then enter a Newtake to run with a different fully registered DPS stallion.
  • The progency of SRD2 mares are potential fully registered ponies and may be graded fully registered as foals followign a successful inspection and approval.

All Supplementary ponies are registered in the Supplementary section of the DPS stud book.

SRD and SR1/SRD1 mares may be sold to breeders residing in the National Park to continue upgrading. If sold off Dartmoor any progeny may not be registered in the DPS Supplementary Register.

DPHT and The DPS

The DPHT’s objective is to protect and preserve the Dartmoor Heritage Pony on Dartmoor. The Heritage Pony is a true to type (as defined by the DPS) un-registered Dartmoor Pony. The work of the DPHT complements and supports the work of the DPS who through the Newtake Scheme seeks to maintain pedigree Dartmoor Ponies on Dartmoor and improve stock. The DPHT encourages and supports maintaining and improving the quality of Heritage Ponies on Dartmoor, owned by Dartmoor farmers and keepers some of which will enter the Newtake Scheme.
