‘Grazing: the good, the bad and the ugly’
Start time: meet 9.45 ready to set off promptly at 10am
Start place: Postbridge forestry car park. This is not Postbridge visitor centre but the free car park on the opposite side of the road.
End time: 1pm
Event description: We will walk to Bellever Tor and back – a total distance of 4 miles. As we walk we will discuss the impact of grazing on Dartmoor, including stocking levels and the differing impact of ponies, cattle and sheep. At the tor we will investigate the results of our ponies’ grazing on vegetation and bird numbers. Skylarks are busy setting up territories there at the moment so we hope to be treated to some beautiful birdsong too.
What to wear/bring: Well-treaded footwear as we will be walking across some uneven moorland. Waterproofs, warm layers and sun protection – Dartmoor weather is so changeable. Binoculars if you have some. Drink and snack.
