Shoppers at the Bovey Tracey, Devon Co-op stores at Riverside, Newton Road and Trago Mills, have helped to raise over £8,500 for local Charity, the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust, through the Co-op Membership scheme.
Receiving the cheque for £8,514 during Celebration Day visits to both Riverside and Trago Mills stores, the team of DPHT volunteers were delighted with the strong support of staff and shoppers alike. The money will go towards raising awareness of the importance of ensuring a long term future for the Dartmoor pony on Dartmoor; and for the development of its Equine Assisted Learning programmes known as ‘Ponies Inspiring People’.
Representing the Trustees of the Charity at the Riverside Store Celebration event was Avril Kerswell, Chairman of Teignbridge District Council and past Mayor of Bovey Tracey, who has just been appointed as a Patron of the DPHT.
Avril said: “My love affair with the Dartmoor Pony goes back to my childhood when as a pony-mad girl of twelve years old, my father bought me a six-month-old colt from Ugborough market. I named him Gaiety. My daughter’s second pony was also a Dartmoor. I bought him when she was six and he was five. The most genuine pony I’ve ever known. He gave her so many life qualities including caring, being responsible and most of all having fun.
“I am proud of the work that this Charity does to support people with a range of life challenges. The funds raised for DPHT by Co-op Members will undoubtedly be put to good use to inspire people of all ages who live throughout Devon – and beyond.”
