EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING
Opening Minds and Healing Hearts
If you work with young people with special educational needs or struggling with life challenges. DPHT can offer a range of educational visits and therapeutic opportunities with Dartmoor ponies.
The Aim of Our Equine Assisted Learning
We want our equine assisted learning courses to help young people meet their full potential and provide them with a set of social and emotional skills that will allow them to participate more effectively in everyday life.
Our courses are flexible and are proven to help students facing such challenges as:
- Anger management
- Anxiety
- Autism
- Grief & Loss
- Personal development
The Thinking behind our courses
We aim to help young people on our Equine Assisted Learning courses by helping them form a relationship with our herd, an individual equine and the environment.
DPHT helps participants to build trust and develop a bond of mutual empathy with our ponies; through this they learn to face their fears, develop respect and compassion, while improving communication skills, coping techniques, self-confidence and self-esteem in a safe environment with trained facilitators.
Every session builds on the last, are bespoke and very much client-focused

“We generally see a great improvement in students we send to DPHT, especially those who are anxious, have low self-esteem or finding it difficult to come into college.
“For these students. having such an environment as DPHT away from school is invaluable. It enables them to learn new communication skills, boosts their confidence, find a connection with ponies which is something so new to them and gives them a chance to reflect on their learning and capabilities.
“Such courses give staff here a positive experience to use with the students when they are having difficulties.”
